2017 Toyota Highlander: The Perfect Mid-size SUV!

The 2017 Toyota Highlander is a capable mid-size SUV with lots of style and technology wrapped up in it. This year’s Highlander received a lot of new and upgraded technology, keeping it at the head of the pack in the SUV market.

Highlander offers room for eight, a selection of three powertrains, and six model trims to suit all types of owners. There is a new trim labeled SE, and two hybrid trims LE and XLE. The gas Highlanders are available in front-wheel or all-wheel drive, and the hybrids are only available in all-wheel drive. The standard engine is a 2.7 liter 4-cylinder paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The drivetrain is being enhanced with a new efficient 3.5-liter direct-injection V-6 engine and a new Direct Shift 8AT automatic transmission with its 8-speed gears. The V-6 is available on all gas Highlanders and standard on the hybrids. Additional gas efficiency in the gas trims is provided by a new stop and start engine system (except in the LE). The system will shut off the engine when the Highlander comes to a stop, and restart when the driver takes their foot off the brake. All Highlander hybrid trims come standard with an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission.

Styling changes in the 2017 Toyota Highlander add a sense of luxury inside and out. New upper and lower grille finishes are distinctive for each model trim. The rear taillights are redesigned for a sleek look, and both Limited and Platinum receive a chrome-finish rear bumper trim. Three new exterior colors are being offered in 2017; Celestial Silver Metallic, Toasted Walnut Pearl, and Salsa Red Pearl on the SE. Inside the Highlander, the Limited Platinum receives a new brown leather interior, and all Highlanders are upgraded with four additional USB charging points for a total of five. Also, owners of the Limited and Limited Platinum trims can choose between second-row captain’s chairs for a total of seven seats, or a bench seat for a total of eight.

The new SE trim offers a sporty alternative for Highlander owners. Features include 19-inch unique aluminum alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, and a black finished grille and headlight housings. Inside, the sport treatment continues with black leather-trimmed seats with silver stitching and patterned seat inserts, black front tray, and matching inserts in the doors and dash.

Safety features have also improved with Toyota’s Safety Sense™ now standard on all Highlanders. This system includes automated pre-collision braking, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, dynamic radar cruise control, and a pedestrian pre-collision system. The XLE will also have standard blind spot monitoring. The Limited Platinum will also be equipped with a Birds-Eye View Camera with perimeter scan, permitting a 360-degree view around the vehicle.
