Toyota Motor Corporation Models Receive 10 Segment Awards

Luxury nameplates aren’t the only vehicles on the road capable of extraordinary long-term quality. The 2017 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study, which is now in its 28th year, “examines problems experienced during the past 12 months by original owners of 2014 model-year vehicles,” according to J.D. Power. “Overall dependability is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality. The study covers 177 specific problems grouped into eight major vehicle categories.”

As the results rolled in, the study showed that the Toyota Camry led its segment in the Vehicle Dependability Study and Toyota Motor Corporation received 10 of the 18 segment awards. This is the highest number of awards ever received by one individual corporation in the study’s history. Toyota earned a 123 PP100 rating, placing it in third place behind Lexus (110 PP100) and Porsche (also 110 PP100). Toyota moved up one position since last year, beating out Buick, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Dodge, Ford and Land Rover, among many other brands.

“While many expensive and niche vehicles do have excellent quality, the fact is that most consumers are shopping in the high-volume mainstream segments,” said Dave Sargent, vice president of global automotive at J.D. Power in the J.D. Power press release. “The good news is that consumers don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a very dependable vehicle.”
