Toyota has birthed a completely new Toyota, the Toyota Mirai!

The bold new colors: atmospheric blue metallic, nautical blue metallic, crystal white, elemental silver and celestial black won’t be the only characteristic that catches your eye.

The chiseled lines and precise curves of the aerodynamic design make this car the most innovative Toyota on the market. Elements such as touch sensor door handles, heated outside mirrors with power folding, blind spot monitoring with rear traffic alert, and 17” engraved alloy wheels all contribute to the design of the Mirai. Dynamic radar cruise control, front, and rear parking sonar LED headlamps with auto high beam, and wide-angle fog lamps bring the exterior style full circle.

The interior is just as impressive with 8-way power-heated SofTex seating with power lumbar support for comfort, intelligent touch controls, heated power tilt and telescoping steering wheel with multifunctional controls, premium audio with navigation and Entune app suite, and acoustic noise-reducing glass for windshield, driver side and front-passenger-side windows.

But with the Mirai, it’s all about the Hydrogen! Hydrogen pumps into the vehicle while the gas travels to carbon fiber reinforced fuel tanks where the hydrogen is stored. Then the front grill brings in outside air into the fuel cell stack. Hydrogen travels from the fuel tanks to the fuel stack where a chemical reaction involving the oxygen in the air occurs, creating electricity. Applying gas sends the electricity from the fuel cell stack to the motor and this magical chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen leave behind nothing but pure water exiting your tailpipe.

It’s about safety. The materials containing the hydrogen were selected because of the ability to contain the hydrogen without leaking. If the Mirai were in a high-speed collision, sensors created will stop the flow of hydrogen so the hydrogen would be unable to travel to potentially damaged systems outside of your tank. The system automatically shuts the hydrogen output valve. Any leaked hydrogen gets dispersed outside the cabin because all hydrogen related parts are located outside the cabin to prevent any build up. Gas is lighter than air which means it will disperse into the atmosphere more quickly. This in return reduces the time that damage could be caused in the event of ignition. Any impact force from a collision is distributed around the passenger cabin and Toyota Fuel Cell Stack and hydrogen tanks, reducing body deformation to help reduce the chance of injury and the steering column collapses to help reduce force during impact for the driver.

In addition, the Toyota star safety system includes braking, stability and traction control. The millimeter- wave radar detects obstacles and vehicles on the same route by alerting with an audible and display notification for a possible collision. Automatic braking and lane departure are other safety features available.
