Whatever car you have your sights on, it was built for a certain purpose. Overall, it was built for driving but we are talking specifics here because the overarching driving aim has different layers when you strip it down.

There is driving for towing, driving for traveling, driving for cruising, and just driving around the block or a few miles to work. These different layers determine what size of the engine, underneath the hood of any car, is right for you.

Comparing and contrasting two extremes, the engine size for a car built to drive for towing will be bigger than that of a car built for driving around the block or a few miles to work. So how do you figure out the engine size that is right for you? We have some suggestions to get this figured out.

The Right Engine Size for You

Find out the Utility

Utility means usage or use case. What do you need the engine under the hood for – cruises or courier duties, long trips or neighborhood trips to the mall, hauling or towing? Once you figure out what its utility will be, it is a little less difficult knowing what next to do. As aforementioned, if your utility choice is for neighborhood trips around the block, you would need a smaller engine size than you would need for courier duties with Uber Eats.

Figure out the Speed

Really, how much speed do you need under the hood in relation to the performance of your car on the road? Neighborhood drives, cruises and towing do not need much speed; a moderate level of speed is okay because you have to be watchful of residents/pedestrians on the road or the cargo behind you. But if you are a race car enthusiast or someone who loves speed, then you need a bigger engine size.

Find out the Cylinder Size

The third thing to do is to find out the size of the cylinder under the hood. There are different types to choose from, from straight to inline and the rest of them but we will keep them really simple and just go with the more common ones: 4-Cylinder engine (cruises, neighborhood drives and carriage of small cargoes), 6-Cylinder engine aka V6 engine (small loads carriage plus some level of fuel economy) and 8-Cylinder engine aka V8 engine (if you are thinking of haulage or towing).
