The Toyota Sienna Joins the Dark Side

Minivans are not especially known for being ‘cool’. The stigma associated with minivans has existed since the concept first arose, but there have been efforts in recent years to push back on the notion that a minivan can’t have an edge.

Toyota seems poised to tackle this problem with the unveiling of a new Nightshade edition of its venerable Sienna minivan line. The Sienna nameplate has never had an issue with sales, selling well over 50,000 units last year, but removing the stigma will go a long way towards competing against the burgeoning crossover segment.

Officially the 2020 Toyota Sienna SE Premium Nightshade Edition, this package provides aesthetic enhancements to the exterior of the Sienna. By blacking out the shinier bits, the Sienna picks up an edgy masculine vibe. A black mesh grille, door handles, and mirror caps adorn the exterior, while an all-black interior grants it an undeniable style. Riding on 19-inch wheels that have been given a gunmetal-finish, the Nightshade Sienna has a definitive swagger.

All of these aesthetic changes come without any loss of the features that make the Sienna great to begin with. Three-row passenger seating can accommodate up to eight passengers and the 3.5-liter V-6 beneath the hood still beats out 296 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque. That’s enough juice to tow 3,500 pounds when properly equipped. The cabin is replete with available amenities, including tri-zone climate control, JBL 10-speaker audio system and a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay compatibility.
